Super Smash Bros Brings ESport to the Boston Community

Esports enters new territory this Sunday as Emerson College and Big Blue Esports host a 10-hour “Super Smash Bros” tournament at the historic Paramount Theater. Sixteen teams from area universities will compete in “Super Smash Bros,” providing esports a firm foundation within the wider Boston community. It’s a significant advancement for the controversial but exponentially expanding esports industry.

Emerson, a leader in esports, is the first major institution in the Northeast to take the competition outside of the academic incubator. In doing so, Emerson is making esports accessible while cultivating the genre’s development. The “Super Smash Bros” tournament not only imparts greater legitimacy to the field but helps usher esports into an entirely new realm. The tournament also complements Emerson’s esports production and management class, one of the first in the nation to afford students the unique opportunity to hone their production and management skills though video games in the context of esports.

Participating institutions include: Emerson College, Harvard University, Northeastern University, Boston University, University of Massachusetts (Amherst), Emerson College, Berklee College of Music, Colleges of Fenway, University of Massachusetts (Boston), University of Massachusetts (Lowell), University of Connecticut, and Stonehill College.
