The open world adventure, which sees you plan and strategize missions out into the deep blue sea in vehicles that you can design and build yourself, is currently being developed by UK studio Sunfire Software.
Stormworks: Build And Rescue sees players take charge of their own sea-rescue service, both taking advantage of and tackling the rich and dramatic physics playground in which it all takes place. Reacting to events out on the water, players need to steer or fly custom designed, block based and programmable vehicles out into fierce oceanic storms, pulling off thrilling rescues in a variety of challenging crisis scenarios.
“The design system is something we’re really proud of and is a fundamental way players can be creative with how they play Stormworks: Build And Rescue,” says Dan Walter, CEO of Sunfire Studios. “Based around a block based system and a rich editing suite, anyone playing can program the behaviour using the powerful logic system.”
“Create planes, helicopters, boats and more using a wide array of tools and components. It’s a truly flexible approach we think will make each rescue, and each game different for every player.”
In Stormworks: Build And Rescue, players’ designs will be tested to the limit in a physics driven sandbox simulation, where the vehicle’s performance in a rescue is directly linked to its design. Each mission calls for an emergency response for scenarios across the open ocean, island facilities, rigs, and more, with the game’s dynamic weather system and day-night cycle ensuring one rescue is never quite like any other.
Above other changes, the updated build for the open beta demo includes a new missions system. Non player characters and vehicles are also now built in, adding life to the world with computer controlled characters and vehicles, as well as birds, sealife, underwater plants and rock structures.
Last but not least, players can also now build underwater vehicles, with new graphical effects for water also taking effect with the aim to create a more organic and seamless world.
“It’s quite something seeing Stormworks: Build And Rescue in motion,” says Dan. “The water is both your friend and your enemy, with strong winds transforming the ocean from a sea of gentle ripples to fierce heaving waves, all while the vehicles simulate a physically based displacement-buoyancy system. It’s a force to be reckoned with, and one players are going to have to conquer.”
