MundoVino Launches D.V. Catena Tinto Histórico
MundoVino, a member of The Winebow Group, is proud to introduce the newly released D.V. Catena Tinto Histórico as part of the Catena wines’ portfolio.
“My grandfather Domingo, D.V. Catena, was famous for his Tinto Buenos Aires blend, which was served in the capital’s European-style bistros at the turn of the century,” said Dr. Laura Catena, fourth generation vintner and Managing Director of Bodega Catena Zapata. “He was a true artisan, and blending was his greatest talent, one that he passed on to my father.”
Domingo Vicente Catena, better known as Don Domingo, was the son of Nicola Catena, who founded the Bodega Catena Zapata winery in 1902. He was also the father of Nicolás Catena Zapata, who revolutionized Argentine winemaking in the 1990s with a focus on high altitude viticulture and vineyard research, efforts that continue today with his daughter, Dr. Catena.
Domingo’s Tinto Buenos Aires was made from a blend of grapes from the old vines of Maipú and fruit grown in La Consulta in the southern Uco Valley, the site of Catena’s present Nicasia vineyard. The dark-colored wine was sold in casks, shipped to Buenos Aires and bottled there for sale.
D.V. Catena Tinto Histórico is made from 92 percent Malbec and 8 percent Petit Verdot, a combination that is similar to the original Tinto Buenos Aires blend. “In some years, Don Domingo added Bonarda to the blend, and we plan to include it in future bottlings of the Tinto Histórico,” added Dr. Catena.
The grapes are grown in four high altitude estate vineyards owned by the Catena family: Adrianna, Angélica, El Cepillo, and La Pirámide. The wine captures both the spirit of the original and that era in Buenos Aires when Domingo’s wine was enjoyed in restaurants everywhere.
The D.V. Catena Tinto Histórico 2014 will be available nationally in April with a suggested retail price of $21.00.
