Study reveals new facts on American attitudes towards pet nutrition

With National Pet Day (April 11) reminding us how much we love our pampered pooches and coddled cats, a new survey from Open Farm pet food has revealed some startling new facts on what today’s pet parents are looking for when it comes to feeding their furry loved ones.

Ninety-four per cent of American pet owners indicated that their pet’s nutrition is just as important as their family’s nutrition, while 43 per cent stated that they would be eating healthier meals, if they ate their pet’s food.

“As the trend to health and wellness becomes more pronounced in the human world, pet parents are becoming far more conscious of finding superior quality foods to support the overall health and well-being of their pets,” says Isaac Langleben, co-founder of Open Farm. “Open Farm pet foods uses the highest quality ingredients that are ethically sourced from farm to bowl. Much like in the consumer foods segment, consumers are looking for healthy, natural solutions that also have a positive impact on animal welfare and the environment.”

Founded in 2013, Open Farm is a rapidly growing, premium pet food company, based in Toronto, Canada, that makes ethically-raised and sourced pet food. The company produces grain-free dog and cat food recipes focused on a limited set of premium proteins, fruits and vegetables.

Other study highlights include:

•84 per cent of pet owners agree they pay as much attention to the ingredients that go into their pet’s food as the ingredients their family eats.

•89 per cent of pet owners agree that it’s important that the ingredients in their pet’s food are ethically sourced.

•9 out of 10 Americans say it’s important that the pet food they purchase provides transparency of ingredients.

“Transparency and traceability of our ingredients are very important to us and to our customers,” continues Langleban. “We have a unique and ethical supply chain and provide detailed information on our website about the source of each ingredient we use in our products.”

Open Farm was recently awarded a prestigious NEXTY Award at the 2017 Natural Products Expo West for Best New Transparently Sourced Product and is available in more than 2,500 pet specialty stores across North America.

Survey Methodology: Open Farm conducted an online survey of 1,360 American dog and cat owners, between February 27 and March 3, 2017.
